Pet Care

The Basics of Pet Care

Responsible pet ownership begins with proper pet care. When you adopt a dog, you must understand that you are committing to this furry family member for the rest of your life.

The unconditional love and joy pets bring into our lives are enough to compensate for the additional responsibility of adding a furry member to your family. Here are some essentials responsible pet owners should provide to ensure the health and happiness of their pets.

Healthy food is essential for pets

Pets need food that is tailored to their nutritional requirements. Cat foods are made to meet the dietary requirements of cats, while dog foods are meant to meet those of dogs. Their dietary requirements are also very different. Puppies need food other than senior dogs. Special diets may be required for pets with certain health conditions. Table scraps can be harmful to dogs and cats. Many foods we eat, such as garlic, onions, salt, and other ingredients, are unhealthy for them.

Remember to feed your pets the correct amount of food! If you overfeed your pet or give him too many treats, it could lead to obesity. This could trigger other health problems like heart disease, kidney problems, etc. It would be best to weigh your options for pet food to avoid illnesses like these. If you need to figure out what’s best, ask your veterinarian!

Give your pet access to clean drinking water 24/7

Pets need water to survive, just like humans. All animals under your care should always have access to a clean water bowl. Place it close to their food bowl and refill the water at least twice daily. Your pet will stay cool, hydrated, and healthy.

Clean aquariums once a week if your pet is a fish or turtle. If you don’t, your aquariums could smell, and your pets may become sick.

A safe and comfortable shelter is an essential part of proper pet care

Cats should always be kept inside for their safety. This includes keeping them away from cars, aggressive dogs, and predators. Cats love to retreat into a cocoon or covered bed inside.

If you allow your dog to run off-leash in your fenced yard, ensure he has tags, is microchipped and registered, and has your current contact information. Writing your pet on Finding Rover is also a great idea. Water and shade are always needed. Dogs also enjoy their bed indoors. Older dogs may benefit from an orthopedic mattress.

Pets should not be left outside in extreme temperatures. Also, predators such as coyotes are a concern. They tend to be active at night and can also be seen during the day.

Your pet needs to use the toilet regularly

Housebreaking is possible for many animals, allowing them to roam around the house without worrying about accidents. At least one litterbox should be available for cats.

Puppies must go potty every hour or two during the day. As a general rule, a puppy should be able to hold it as long as her age in months plus one. A three-month-old puppy should take a bathroom break at least every four hours. Learning your dog’s needs is essential, but you shouldn’t expect him to “hold it” for more than six hours. Just like seniors, senior dogs need to relieve themselves more often. Dogs can learn to use potty pads or doggy doors or wait until they go on a walk to relieve themselves.

It doesn’t matter where your pet uses the bathroom; ensure it is cleaned regularly. Proper hygiene and sanitation can prevent dirt and bacteria buildup and protect your pet’s well-being. You will also find that your pets appreciate a clean place to relieve themselves.

Exercise your pet regularly

Exercise is an essential part of pet care. Exercise is necessary for your pet’s physical and mental health. You can see all sorts of animals playing on social media. For example, the turtle playing with a ball, the dog fetching himself, or even this bird playing with a cup. Some people mistakenly believe that a pet’s misbehavior is simply the animal being bored and amused. This could be by getting into the garbage, tearing up the sofa, or…well, you get the picture. Socialization is also beneficial for pets, whether it’s through regular interactions with you, inviting guests over, or taking them outside. Improve their social skills and expand their horizons while allowing them to experience new things safely!

Healthy habits and regular doctor visits are essential for pets.

You should visit a trusted local veterinarian at least once yearly to ensure your pet is healthy and agile. Vaccinations are essential for your pet [LINK: Cat & Dog Vaccines]. Your pet’s overall health is also affected by clean teeth and healthy gums. If they show signs of illness, take your pet to the vet immediately.

Regularly grooming your pet (if necessary) is another way to keep them healthy and happy. Dogs can suffer from painful mats of fur. Even though your pets may not enjoy it, bathing, brushing, trimming nails, and removing fleas/ticks may be necessary to their health.

You and your pet will enjoy a lifetime together if you follow the tips above.
